At the Seventh Annual Nevada State Finals on Saturday, March 24, an engaged audience at CommRow’s Cargo Music Hall in downtown Reno listened intently as  13 high-schooled aged students recited 29 classic and contemporary poems.

Mandy Titolo a senior at the College of Southern Nevada High School - West, in Clark County, was selected as the 2012 Poetry Out Loud Champion.  She receives $1,000, $1,000 for her school for the purchase of poetry books and/or literary programming, and an all-expense-paid trip to the National Finals in Washington, DC in May. The National Finals awards $50,000 in awards and school stipends, with a $20,000 prize for the POL National Champion.

Graciela Maya-Joseph, a sophomore at Owyhee High School in Elko County, and Jennifer Simon a junior at Pahrump Valley High School in Nye County, placed second and third respectively. Both receive $500 each, with $500 for their respective schools.

This year, more than 2,500 students participated in the Nevada program. Kathleen Sandoval, First Lady of Nevada, served as honorary chair for the event. The panel scored the students on physical presence, voice and articulation, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding, accuracy and appropriateness of dramatization.

Nevada's state champion, Emily Orellana, received $1,000, an all-expense-paid trip to represent Nevada at the National Finals April 27-29 in Washington, DC and $2,000 for her school for the purchase of poetry books and/or programming. The second and third place students, Sarah Jamieson and Dani Cabot, each received $500, with $1,000 for their schools. POL National Finals will bestow a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends, with a $20,000 prize for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion. (read more)

Fifteen district semi-finalists competed on March 19 at the 6th Annual Nevada State Finals of Poetry Out Loud a national recitation contest that encourages high-school aged students to learn about great poetry through recitation and memorization. Students who advanced from poetry recitation district championships gathered in Reno at the Knitting Factory from noon to 3 p.m. and competed for the state champion title.
